The conference was convened by John McCarthy, who coined the term “artificial intelligence,” defining it as the science of creating machines “with the ability to achieve goals in the world.”4 The Dartmouth Conference was attended by a who’s who of AI pioneers, including Claude Shannon, Alan Newell, Herbert Simon, and Marvin Minsky.
