How TESLA Is Combining Virtual Reality With AI: The SLAM Revolution

TESLA as a whole has been going through a rollercoaster of missing investments, restructuring and rebuilding matters in the last couple of years. What didn't change, though, within probably the most technologically advanced automotive company in the world, is their willingness to push AI-related technology in order to improve both their driving experience and, most importantly, to speed the process which will lead to the infamous "driverless experience". Let's analyse the matter in more detail, in order to understand how SLAM and AI are working together in Elon Musk's brightest creation.

The Combination Of VR And AI

SLAM (Simultaneous Localization And Mapping) is a VR-based application which automatically and instantly translates the data gathered by VR peripherals into a digitally created environment which represents what's been gathered. Although mainly used in mapping applications, such as the newest Google Maps embryonic version, SLAM has been applied deeply within TESLA's autopilot, given the fact that it relies on the most advanced capturing sensors on the market. SLAM processes the surroundings to then transmit to the mainframe which hazards are on the road, if there are any road works and everything in between. Although pretty simple in terms of concept, this has heavily improved the already advanced Autopiloting feature, currently at its fifth version.

From Floor To 360

When it comes to AI processing within these applications, there has been an evolution from a strictly floor based algorithm (the one, to reference, used to process QWERTY codes) to a 360 degrees one, which takes every single environmental variable into consideration. The combination of both these algorithms, although, is been actively used in TESLA's new Autopilot, which processes floor based data (the one coming from Google Maps) and cross-references it with the one gathered by the above-mentioned SLAM application.

How Ground-Breaking Is This?

TESLA's technological engine has been researched by Audi recently, who applied some features related to cruise controlling their vehicles in their new e-Tron SUV. Given the fact that TESLA is the most advanced company in terms of AI combination within the automotive industry, we can safely say that this matter will be researched by many companies in the near future, confirmation of the need and willingness to implement automated, Python-coded features in order to reach the driverless experience as soon as possible.

To Conclude

Even after a shocking year in terms of business management, the technological development side of things in TESLA has been going strong, raising resources and, most importantly, awareness to a matter (AI within the automotive sector), which will become immensely big in the nearest future.
